CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Three major body parts: the head, thorax, and gastor (abdomen)
  • Antennae
  • Mandibles (jaws)
  • Petiole
  • Compound eyes
  • Black, brown, reddish-brown, and sometimes, yellow in color
  • 6 legs
  • Most queens and a small number of male ants have wings

EFFECTS OF ANT ACTIVITY ON HUMANS:

  • Swarms of ants are hard to control
  • Some ants may bite or even worse, sting

WHAT ATTRACTS ANTS?

  • Water availability
  • Greasy substances
  • Sugary items
  • Spilt juice/soda that go uncleaned
  • Crumbs of food
  • Trash that is not frequently taken out
  • Uncleaned animal food and water bowls
  • Strong odors
  • Certain insects (i.e. aphids, scale insects, etc.)

PREVENTION OF ANT INFESTATION:

  • Make sure all leftover food is closed tightly in containers
  • Empty out the trash more often
  • Clean up spilled juice/soda, water, and food
  • Regularly clean countertops and tables in the kitchen to prevent food buildup
  • Fix cracks along walls and floors
  • Properly seal doors and windows
