The most common cockroaches are the German cockroach and the American cockroach.

CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Differs in size due to its species and maturity
  • Colors vary from black, dark brown, brown, reddish-brown, orange, and hints of light-orange to dark yellow
  • Visible to the naked eye
  • Have long, hard bodies
  • Shiny, shell-like backs
  • Wings covering the entire abdomen
  • Have antennas, forelegs, mid-legs, and hind-legs

WHAT ATTRACTS COCKROACHES?

  • Unsanitary living conditions such as a poorly-kept home
  • Dirty dishes left in the sink
  • Food or water left out on tables
  • Dark and moist places

EFFECTS OF COCKROACH ACTIVITY ON HUMANS:

  • They are a nuisance as they eat just about anything they can find and can survive or live anywhere
  • Able to contaminate human food
  • Can plague and invade home
  • Secretes unpleasant odors
  • Some may develop allergies to them
  • They can and do carry disease pathogen

PREVENTION OF COCKROACH INFESTATION

  • Deprive them of food and water (i.e. store food away in tight containers, clean up leftovers, empty trash regularly, fix dripping faucets)
  • Get rid of cracks or holes where cockroaches may enter
  • A clean area and sanitation is key to keeping them away
