There are three common species of flies: the Musca domestica (Common House Fly), Fannia canicularis (Little House Fly), Stomoxys calcitans (Stable Fly), (Flesh Fly)

CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Adult flies are about ¼ to ½ of an inch in length
  • Segmented body with the head, abdomen, and thorax
  • Two large compound eyes, brownish purple in color
  • Transparent wings

WHAT ATTRACTS FLIES?

  • Decaying and decomposed matter
  • Manure and other feces
  • Food, rotting or not
  • Garbage
  • Sweat
  • Dirty water
  • Dead animals

EFFECTS OF FLY ACTIVITY ON HUMANS:

  • Responsible for carrying diseases and parasites
  • Infests human food

PREVENTION OF FLY INFESTATION:

  • Keep home or work place clean
  • Remove trash daily
  • Immediately remove rotting food, feces, and dead animals from site
  • Use aerosol insecticide sprays to kill adult flies
